The genre for my short preview film is fiction and falls into the thriller genre. I have listed below 5 different opening sequences for the different programmes below. In my opinion, and compared to what I have so far I think these 5 resemblance my idea the most.
The first programme I am analysing is the opening sequence for the American teen drama mystery thriller based on the popular series of novels written by Sara Shepard. The show is shown on ABC Family which I think is very similar to E4, although shown in America mostly. The entire programme is based around 5 best friends. Although now it is 4, on the night of one of their birthdays they had a sleepover with just the 5 of them in the middle of nowhere in a barn. One then wakes up to find 2 of them are missing.  After finding one of the friends they are still confused as to where the other girl Alison is. One year later, they begin receiving messages from a mysterious figure using the name "A", who threatens to expose their secrets. At first, they think it's Alison herself, but after her body is found, the girls realize that someone else knows their secrets, including long-hidden ones they thought only Alison knew. "A" also stalked Alison, and the girls continue to discover more and more information about "A" and Alison's disappearance - all while risking their lives.
The opening sequence for Pretty Little Liars is one of my favourites, especially the song choice. The opening sequence starts with a close up of someone’s eye. We then begin to see quick shots of her lips, her feet, her hair etc. It looks to us as though she is getting ready to go somewhere, until someone uses their hand to close her eyes. We then see two hands being placed on another and then her being closed into a coffin. It then shows a shot of the 4 girls standing near the coffin. All showing some sort of nervous expression portrayed by their facial expressions and body language. It then ends on it zooming it to one of the girls faces who then put hers hand on her lips and says “Sh…”

I think it is significant how at first we think that it is someone getting ready, but then it turns out to be someone is actually being embalmed for a public viewing. After we see the coffin it then turns to the friends which makes them look suspicious and as though they have something to do with it. As Aria puts her hand on her lips the last word said in the song is “Cause two can keep a secret, if one of them is dead."

The second programme I am analysing is Sherlock. Sherlock is a British Television crime drama that presents a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. I have decided to use this programme as one that is similar to my idea as it has a Sherlock feel to it.

My plot is based around the friends trying to find out who is sending them these messages. It involves a lot of detective work, and one of the most known detectives is Sherlock Holmes. There is one scene in particular that I researched in Sherlock that I want to use for my programme. The scene is where the characters in Sherlock are sitting around a table and all receive a text at the same time. This is similar to a scene that I want in my programme. The idea is that, the girls will be sitting around the table and they will each get text alerts from “A” I have been  trying to find out how I should show the text messages to the audience in a suitable way. I decided that I want to do this the way it is done in Sherlock.
